Meet the Teen Trainers

The reason that I am participating in this program is because of the fact that I see young workers dying or getting hurt on the job, mainly for no reason.  A recent story that comes to mind is towards the murder of Jamil Bader.  He was a young innocent worker, who worked in his family store when two robbers came in and shot Jamil in the head.  The thing that pushed me forward into this program is that, that could have been me.  It’s important because I need to let people know how to handle these situations without them being hurt.  Before I started working for this program, I really didn’t care about this lesson or didn’t think about it, but now I have started to realize the aspects of this topic.

After being trained for this class, I've realized how scary this really is. You come to work every day and expect that your environment is safe yet suddnely you're put in a horrific situation because your manager didn't handle all of the safety precautions. This is a problem that has been effecting workers for ages but it really takes a toll on young workers that aren't fully aware of their rights. We, as young workers will put up with more because we don't know what is and isn't supposed to go on within the workplace. On of my friends has been working in a nail salon for years and I know she has never been properly trained on how to deal with the chemicals that she is around for hours. That is something that sends a chill down my spine to know that she is close to getting injured every time she goes in to work. I just want to make sure that I can help as many people as possible to stay safe on the job and not end up as another story on the news.

A year ago I started this program without knowing about workplace violence. I was not a teen leader, but I observed some of the trainings that were done and I was amazed. I did not know teens have as many rights as we do. I am an employee at McDonald's and I have witnessed co-workers who were burned on the job. We as young workers have little knowledge of our rights and it is my job to inform them in hopes that they will keep them in mind in case something hazardous happens.
